The starting point for snow-sock sizing is the tyre sidewall. Read the complete size from the tyres currently on the vehicle, then use that exact information with the current chart for the product you intend to buy.
Find the complete sequence
Look for a sequence such as 205/55 R16, rather than a single large number or the tyre brand. The width, aspect ratio and wheel diameter work together. Copy the spaces and slash carefully enough that a seller can see which value belongs to which part.

Check what is actually fitted
A handbook may list several approved wheel options, and a previous receipt may describe an earlier set. These are useful supporting records, but do not let them replace looking at the current tyres. Check the rear as well when the vehicle may use different axle sizes.
Create a usable record
Take one image showing where the code sits on the tyre, followed by a clear close-up. Store the transcription beside the photograph. For example, “205/55 R16” is a useful size record; “sixteen-inch wheels” is incomplete for this task.
- Record the full size.
- Check both axles where necessary.
- Keep the photograph with the compatibility confirmation.
Reading the code gives you the input for a size check, not an automatic MATTE size assignment. Match it to the exact series chart and resolve any missing or conflicting entry before ordering.
